Building Information Modelling - BIM (Springboard)

Coláiste Dhúlaigh is pleased to offer this FREE Springboard course in Building Information Modelling at LEVEL 6. We will be taking applications as soon as this year’s Springboard programme is launched by the Department of Education and Skills. Check back on this webpage for further details.

This part-time Springboard course prepares participants to be job- ready for using BIM in a wide range of roles in the construction industry, including Architecture, Architectural Technology, BIM Technician, BIM Coordinator, Building Surveyor, Facilities Manager, Engineering, MEP, Project Manager and various Construction Team roles.

BIM is a new approach to Computer Aided Design that is revolutionising how buildings are planned, designed and built. BIM users create intelligent 3D building models, achieving greater productivity, speed of delivery and reduced costs than older CAD systems.

There is an increasing requirement for BIM skills in the construction sector. More and more buildings are being designed using BIM. BIM skills are increasingly sought after in advertised jobs, either as a requirement or to give applicants a competitive advantage.

Participants in this Springboard course will gain hands-on training in using AutoDesk REVIT, the industry-leading BIM software in Ireland and the UK. The course will also cover contemporary multi-storey construction and they will gain experience in applying BIM to a full building project. They will apply their learning from the course, in a twelve week work placement in the building industry. They will attend practical workshops in CV preparation, interview techniques and job seeking, to help maximise their post-course employability and support them in their transition to permanent employment.

All the course teaching will be carried out by qualified Architects, Architectural Technologists and BIM experts, with a small class size for individual attention. The course content has been derived from consultation with industry bodies, including the CIF and CIAT, as well a range of architectural and engineering firms, to ensure relevance to the needs of the current construction industry. Coláiste Dhúlaigh is also partnering with a range of firms to deliver high quality work placement opportunities.

The BIM Springboard course comprises 4 modules from the BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Construction and the Built Environment:

- Building Information Modelling (BIM processes for information-sharing and project management)

- Advanced Construction Drawing & Detailing (professional-level BIM training using Autodesk REVIT,applied to a complex building project)

- Construction Technology for Complex Building Projects(the construction and layout of multi-storey buildings)

- Personal Professional Development(preparation for and participation in a 12-week work placement using REVIT)

Participants will:

  • learn to apply BIM Level 2 in design and construction practice. Going beyond 3D modelling, users create and edit families, e.g. furniture, sanitary installations, schedules, and bills of quantities.
  • learn the principles underlying BIM and apply these to construction projects, using REVIT Architecture and MEP.
  • gain hands-on experience in Autodesk REVIT, the most popular BIM software used in Ireland and related packages.
  • apply complementary skills in project and information management, enabling them to work effectively on a collaborative team.
  • learn multi-storey, residential and commercial construction technology to enable them to apply BIM.
  • Attend practical workshops in CV preparation, interview techniques and job seeking and complete a 12 week work placement using BIM (REVIT).

Entry Requirements:

This Springboard course is suitable for applicants with previous employment experience in the construction sector and/or a prior Level 5 or higher qualification, which includes modules related to the construction sector (e.g. Architecture, Architectural Technology, Renewable Energy Assessment, Structural Engineering or related fields).

Previous experience in Computer Aided Design is required.

Entrants from Leaving Cert level will be considered with a full leaving cert to include a minimum C1 on higher level Construction Studies.

Candidates will be considered for suitability on the basis of prior qualifications, work experience portfolio and interview.

Numbers are limited due to high demand and small class size. For further information, contact: Mike Prendergast at mprendergast@cdcfe.com, tel:(086) 6000318
