Preliminary Building Surveying (VTOS)

QQI Award in Construction Technology Level 5 (5M5010)
QQI Award in Architectural Technology & Design Level 6 (6M4989)

This new Preliminary Building Surveying Course is the only QQI Preliminary Building Surveying Course in the Republic of Ireland.

This course prepares graduates to apply for further study in the increasingly in-demand profession of Building Surveying, with many more job opportunities expected over the next few years than there are graduating Building Surveyors to fill them.

A Building Surveyor specialises in providing professional advice on all aspects of maintaining, altering, repairing, refurbishing and restoring existing buildings. They are also qualified to design and oversee the construction of new buildings. With the heightened awareness of climate change and the need to reduce our carbon footprint, along with economic restraints, there is an increased emphasis on the effective use of both our proposed and existing building stock. This impacts many professions from property owners to developers and buyers who are encouraged to look particularly at their existing building stock and consider reusing them rather than demolishing them in favour of a new build.

The work of a Building Surveyor work can be quite varied and tends to be less desk-bound than other areas of surveying, with a high proportion of time spent on-site. The work can include:

  • Carrying out inspections on buildings before purchase.
  • Investigating the cause of structural problems and coming up with solutions.
  • Dealing with planning applications and advising on property legislation and building regulations.
  • Designing, building, maintaining, renovating and extending new and existing buildings.
  • Project-managing and supervising building projects on site.
  • Building Surveyors are one of only three professions in Ireland (along with registered architects and chartered engineers) who can certify that a building meets the requirements of the Building Control Regulations 2013.

This QQI Preliminary Building Surveying course teaches students the foundations of building & site surveying, planning & construction and building services & project management.

This course also includes hands-on workshop sessions to give students a practical understanding of domestic Sustainable Construction practices to include Passive House methods. The course also offers students an opportunity to learn and gain much needed Building Information Modelling (BIM) skills required by professional practices.
