Professor Luke O’Neill delivered a guest lecture at Coláiste Dhúlaigh’s Coolock campus to coincide with Science Week. The renowned immunologist spoke to students from the science and media departments at CDCFE about his career route, his purpose or “Ikigai”, including his important discoveries in healthcare that are now being trialed by pharmaceutical multinational Roche.

The Professor, who is currently a resident lecturer and researcher at Trinity College Dublin, recounted his early published papers on Crohn’s disease as well as more recent discoveries in immunology through his company Inflazome, which was purchased by Roche in 2020 for €380m.

Speaking about his position as President of the Irish Science Teacher’s Association, O’Neill said he would like to see more focus on STEM subjects the school curriculum. He spoke passionately about careers in the sciences, encouraging the students in attendance to consider science as a profession.
